Print no. 68 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces"Label Text: Hiroshige was celebrated for his night and snow scenes. Here, both landscape types merge in this view from the Kitamatsuura Peninsula in northwest Kyushu. He uses the white of the paper to represent snow on the ground, on the trees, and in the sky. The whiteness of the winterscape contrasts with the sky and the sea, where he employs printed gradations ('bokashi') to convey the sense of depth and distance. Similar gradations give the snowy hills their shape and solidity.
