Print no. 65 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" Label Text: Sakurashima, or “Cherry Blossom Island,” is home to one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Both today and in Hiroshige’s time, Sakurashima was also known for its spring blossoms, citrus fruit, and giant daikon radishes. The artist has chosen to depict the island as a sleeping volcano with groves of blooming tress around its base. A half century later in 1914, a huge eruption filled the channel with lava, joining the famous island to the mainland.
