This autumn scene shows the renowned Monkey Bridge high above the Katsura River. It is believed that a bridge of this unusual cantilevered design has been at this site for over 1,000 years. According to legend, the origins of the design come from the sight of a troupe of monkeys holding hands in order to cross the river. The same subject is treated in Hiroshige’s diptych, shown on the right, which he completed soon after a visit to the bridge in 1841.
