One of Minamoto Yorimitsu’s (948–1021) fearsome Four Warriors, Watanabe Genjitsuna (953–1025) attacked the demon Ibaraki who had taken up residence in the capital’s great southern gate, the Rashōmon. In their first encounter, Genjitsuna was able to slice off the demon’s arm, and the demon then fled. Ibaraki disguised itself as Watanabe’s aunt in order to recover its missing limb, which Watanabe was keeping in a wooden box.
