Print no. 63 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" The village of Gokanosho is in the center of the mountainous island of Kyushu. Hiroshige based this view—a solitary figure using a fallen tree to cross a deep gorge—on an illustration by his older rival Hokusai, who depicted the same place in volume seven of his Hokusai Manga, published in 1817. Neither artist shows the village, but instead emphasizes the locale’s remoteness and the precarious nature of life.
