In contrast to other prints in this series representing the provinces, this urban scene of the capital of Edo (present-day Tokyo) includes close-up views of famous buildings, market stalls, and crowds of people. The subject is the annual, year-end fair celebrated at the Asakusa Kannon Shrine, on the grounds of the Senso Temple in Edo (modern Tokyo). With stars twinkling above the leafless trees, Hiroshige suggests that, even on a winter night, one can find companionship and amusement in the busy city.
