One of Yoshitoshi’s students produced this memorial portrait immediately after the artist’s death, and includes an inscription of Yoshitoshi’s own death poem. The background has been texturized in imitation of silk in order to simulate the appearance of paintings used in Buddhist funerary rituals. The publisher, Akiyama Buemon, issued many of Yoshitoshi’s most iconic series during the last decade of the artist’s life. They reportedly had a close relationship, with Akiyama supporting Yoshitoshi financially through his final illness.
