The regent Fujiwara Tadahira, acting on behalf of Emperor Suzaku, reacted to Masakado's insurrection by sending two warriors to kill Masakado: Fujiwara Hidesato, military constable of Shimotsuke province, and Masakado's cousin Taira Sadamori, the son of the governor of Hitachi province whom Masakado had brutally killed in 935. Hidesato and Sadamori were repeatedly confused by Masakado's many body doubles, but finally cornered him in a battle at Kojima (Shimosa province) in 940.
