Print no. 37 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" Label Text: This print depicts an important mountain pass along the San’indo highway that ran west from Kyoto. Hiroshige shows the area’s main landmark, Demon’s Bridge, as a single natural arch, though the actual formation was composed of three huge rocks. The artist did not visit the area, but based his design—and at least 26 others in his Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces—on illustrations by Fuchigami Kyokko (1753–1816) from the popular travel guide Sansui kikan (Exceptional Mountain and Water Landscapes) (1800–1802).
