Print no. 35 of the series: "Rokujuyoshu meisho zue" ("The sixty odd Provinces: Pictures of...") Province of Sado (an island in the Japan Sea): the mouths of the tunnels of the gold mine.--Gookin Sado Island, off the northwest coast of Japan in the Sea of Japan, was associated with goldmines in the publics' mind. Hiroshige depicts the entrance to the mine tunnels with their wooden scaffolding to support the roofs and a shinto offering above the center mine. Miners and the government overseer are the tiny figures in the foreground.--Swinton
