The Shinto shrines at Izumo were among the oldest and most important in Japan, dedicated to the patron deity of marriage and relationships. In this depiction, three women stand beneath sacred cryptomeria trees near the shrine’s torii gate on a misty day. They carry evergreen offerings and wear katsugi, traditional head coverings shaped like kimonos.
