描述:
Mishima Pass in Kai Province, from the series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji", by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) A single huge tree rises straight through the center of this image. A group of travelers have stopped to link arms around the tree in an attempt to measure how big it really is. In wonder at the hugeness of the tree, this childish activity is a marvelous device for showing the freedom and carefree nature of travel. This is a scene along the road that passes from Kofu through Mishima, through Fuji Yoshida, and from Gotemba then onto Mishima. When you think of ukiyo-e print views of Mt. Fuji, the first series that comes to mind is Hokusai's "Thirty Six Views of Mt. Fuji". This print shows a scene along the road from Kofu to Mishima, where a group of travelers have stopped to try to measure the girth of a massive tree. Mt. Fuji is cut in two by this huge tree, and the mountain is shown in a gradation of tones moving from the base to its peak.
