描述:
Like many privately commissioned surimono, this print is in an unusual long horizontal format. This results from the fact that it probably originally would have had a lower half with an inscription, which is now lost (often the inscriptions, which would have been folded over, were removed by later collectors). Part of the same set as the previous print, it depicts the station of Hara on the Tökaidö, the main road connecting the ancient capital of Kyoto with the political center of Edo. Two women pause to enjoy their pipes, sophisticatedly ignoring the magnificent view of Mount Fuji behind them, while their servant stands agape at the grandeur of the mountain. *Ri and Chö were units of measurement used to calculate distance during the Edo period. “Hokusai’s Summit: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (09/24/2009-01/06/2010) ******************************
