While Westerners clung to their imaginary vision of Japan as a picturesque primitive country, Japan's hard-won technological progress allowed it to become a world power. The torpedo, invented during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95 by a Japanese engineer, transformed naval battles and helped the modernized Japanese military to defeat China.
