Hiroshige, the undisputed master of snowscapes, exploits the white of the paper and sophisticated printing techniques to present a frosty scene of the Sumida River flowing through Edo, or present-day Tokyo. The scene depicted here shows the Imado Bridge over the Sanya Canal. For those who arrived by boat and walked down the embankment, the bridge was the gateway to the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. By depicting it at an early hour under a blanket of snow, the artist gives this normally bustling location an air of quiet purity.
