Hiroshige produced a small number of "bird-and-flower" kakemono-e, inexpensive vertical two-sheet prints that could be mounted like hanging scroll paintings in the family alcove (tokonoma). This design of a majestic Japanese crane, or tancho, balancing on one leg, silhouetted against a rising, red sun, would have been displayed at New Year's.
