Both Tatsuta Mountain, which rises from the mist in the background of this print, and the river, which runs in the foreground, are the subject of many classical Japanese poems and paintings. Before appearing in travel guides and landscape prints, many meisho, or famous places, were renowned for their literary and poetic associations. The fall foliage along the Tatsuta River was celebrated by poets as early as the tenth century. By Hiroshige’s era, the association of autumn with this site was so strong that depicting it in spring would have been unthinkable.
