Although the Tokugawa shogunate promoted the code of Bushido and the Confucian precepts of filial piety and correct deportment, many samurai succumbed to Edo-city pleasures in their leisure time. They socialized with commoners in restaurants and teahouses to compose verses or practice painting and calligraphy; some also visited brothels in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters and theatre performances, often wearing large straw hats to hide their faces.
