Out of loyalty to the exiled Emperor Go-Daigo, the brilliant tactician Kusunoki Masashige (d.1336) fought guerrilla campaigns against the regent Hojo Takatoki. His valiant efforts inspired the emperor to escape in 1333. The generals Ashikaga Takauji (1305-58) and Nitta Yoshisada (1301-38) also joined the imperial cause, the latter forcing the regent to commit seppuku. Go-Daigo's ensuing "Kemmu Restoration" (1333-36) ended the Kamakura era but it also resulted in tragedy. The ambitious Takauji rebelled against Go-Daigo and marched towards Kyoto with troops.
