Here we see Danjuro IX as Danshichi Kurobei from the Kabuki play, Summer Festival: Mirror of Osaka. It is said that one of the reasons for the play's popularity was that Kabuki audiences found Danshichi's nearly naked body, covered with tattoos, erotically exciting. Brandon, Leiter - Kabuki Plays on Stage, Vol. I. Kunichika's legacy is perhaps greatest with his kabuki portraits, with images of Danjuro IX among his finest.
