描述:

Thursday, 26 May 2005 Original watercolor by Japanese artist Torajiro Watanabe signed lower left and dated 1909. Work is 13x20 and matted and framed to 19x26. The frame is gold painted in the form of bamboo and the mat is a woven grass like material to give this a Japanese feel. The scene is a lovely Japanese setting with boats and cherry blossom trees. The back has the frame shop label from E.F. Robinson in Summit NJ and dated 1959. The glass is an old fashioned non glare that distorts the work underneath because the glass looks to have a grainy substance inside unlike modern UV safe non glare glass. We are not able to get a clear image and took several photos in direct sunlight and shade. The watercolor appears to have a few age spots but the glass distorts it and makes it appear darker. Watanabe is listed artist who was born in Japan in 1886 and came to the USA around 1900. He was active with the Woodstock Art Colony in Conneticut from about 1910-1920s when he moved to CA. This is from an estate in Maine of items from three branches of the Morris, Haynes and Moore families who had houses in Boston, New York City and summer home in Maine.
