Original Toshikata (1866 - 1908) Japanese Woodblock Print Gathering Mushrooms: Women of the Shotoku Era (1711 - 16) Series; Thirty-six Selected Beauties, 1891 - 1894 (Sanjuroku Kasen) Gathering Mushrooms: Women of the Shotoku Era (1711 - 16) - Toshikata's lovely series "Thirty-six Selected Beauties" was one of the great masterwork series of the late 19th century. Reflecting back on the classic beauty prints of the previous era, Toshikata created a series of 36 prints illustrating the daily activities of women from various time periods and walks of life. A geisha practicing the shamisen, a beauty in her private quarters, an entertainer crossing the river on a ferry - these charming scenes wonderfully capture life in Japan across the ages. Beautifully printed, many of the images feature deluxe techniques such as delicate embossing or burnishing, along with soft bokashi shading. Collectors prize Toshikata's original prints from this delightful series. Great for collecting or as a wonderful display in any room.
