描述:
This print was created by Ito Shinsui (1898-1972) the great artist of shin-hanga.. Shinsui was born with the name of Ito Hajime to a middle-class Tokyo family. At the age of ten, young Hajime found employment at the Tokyo Printing Company where he began to show serious interest and talent in Nihonga, Japanese-style painting. In 1911 he was introduced to Kaburagi Kiyokata, the renowned painter, and became Kiyokata's student. It was Kiyokata that gave Hajime his artist's name, Shinsui. When Shinsui was eighteen years old, his paintings were seen by the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo at an exhibition at Kiyokata's art school. Shinsui continued to work with Watanabe from 1916 to 1960, designing bijin-ga and landscape prints. He also worked with the publishers Isetatsu, the Yomiuri Newspaper Company, and Katsumura. Here is one of great Shinsui prints OThe Martapura River, BorneoO. A charming image of life on the river at a village with villagers and boat people going about their evening tasks. This print has red Shinsui seal and his signature inside the image. Published in Showa 18 (1943) by Watanabe (publisher seal on the left margin). Oban size 15" by 11"with full margins. Fine impression with hand-applied gofun for the steam rising from the cooking pot, excellent color and registration, perfect condition. This print was never framed, mounted or set down.
