描述:
This image depicts the death of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, the “Sage of the Shakya Clan.” In one episode of his life story, the Buddha said, “In the course of this night the Tathagata (one who has arrived at perfect knowledge, thus the Buddha) will enter Nirväna!” Nirväna literally means “blowing out.” The attainment of Nirväna signifies a merging of an individual with the universe, or his or her realization of oneness with the universe. Therefore, he or she will be released from the wheel of life (suffering) in this world. In this print, the Buddha’s larger scale and his golden-colored face and chest demonstrate his state of ultimate achievement. (from Pathway exhibition 1/29/08-)
