The two women on the left are washing clothes beside a well, while the woman on the right is stretching cloth on tenterhooks. Washing and stretching clothes was one of the important chores of women. Although this is one sheet from a triptych, the compositional arrangement is fine even when looked at apart from the others. (Tadashi Kobayashi, Edo Beauties in Ukiyo-e, 19994)
