Nihonbashi is seen with a blanket of fresh snow, while a pure white Mount Fuji looms large in the distance. The size of this print is narrower than the standard öban size, perhaps in imitation of a small hanging scroll format. Such prints would have been valued not only as souvenirs, but also as interior decoration for an audience that could not afford more expensive custom-mounted paintings. Ukiyo-e artists and publishers constantly strove to create new, innovative effects in their prints in order to capture a larger share of the increasingly sophisticated market during the late Edo period. “Hokusai’s Summit: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (09/24/2009-01/06/2010) ******************************
