描述:
This long, narrow pillar print was most likely made very late in the artist's life, when, after a period of time in which he avoided this format, he returned to it, creating many print designs from after 1767 until his death in 1770. The subject is a young woman who raises a paper fan in her right hand to swat at some irritating summer insects. Harunobu positions the woman only partially in the picture plane, with only her face and right arm and leg depicted. The almost childlike quality of the scene-which includes a girlish and disheveled young woman-is a hallmark of Harunobu's work. The flowing lines of the woman's robe are accentuated by the vertical striped pattern of the kimono and the horizontal band of her obi. The iris and stream in the lower left section indicate that this is a summer scene. (from Summer Evenings: Harunobu exhibition 5/30/06-)
