Colour woodblock print, oban. The kabuki actor Bando Mitsugoro III performing the ‘Shikajima dance’ (‘Shikajima odori’) in the role of a shrine attendant leaping over a ‘mochi’ rice mortar with a pestle in hand; the eighth of twelve sections in the ‘hengemono’ dance ‘Shiki no nagame yosete mitsudai’ (lyrics by Fukumori Kyusuke I and music by Tobaya Richo I,) performed at the Nakamura-za in the 3rd month of 1813. Subtitled 'hazuki' (the eighth lunar month).
